Fort Clatsop
Fort Clatsop preserves the forested setting where the Lewis and Clark Expedition spent the winter of 1805–1806 after reaching the Pacific coast. Surrounded by tall conifers and frequent coastal moisture, the environment feels enclosed and quiet, offering a strong sense of the isolation experienced by the Corps of Discovery at the western edge of the continent.
The reconstructed wooden structures reflect the practical needs of shelter and protection during months of persistent rain and limited supplies. The expedition relied heavily on trade with local Clatsop and Chinook communities, adapting to unfamiliar coastal conditions while preparing for the long journey home.
Walking through the fort and along nearby trails provides a tangible connection to this period of endurance and transition. The subdued light filtering through dense forest reinforces the atmosphere of a winter encampment shaped by resilience, uncertainty, and the anticipation of beginning the return journey east across the continent.
