Exploring Tennessee

Tennessee extends across a diverse landscape shaped by the Appalachian Mountains in the east, the Cumberland Plateau in the center, and the Mississippi River in the west. These geographic regions have long influenced patterns of migration, settlement, and cultural development across the southeastern United States. Mountain passes such as Cumberland Gap National Historical Park served as important corridors for early travel through the Appalachians, forming part of the Wilderness Road used by settlers moving westward into the continental interior.
