Fort Vancouver NHS
Fort Vancouver preserves the setting of an important 19th-century trading post that once served as a major center of commerce and cultural exchange in the Pacific Northwest. The reconstructed fort, open grounds, and surrounding landscape provide a sense of the scale and organization that defined this historic Hudson’s Bay Company outpost along the Columbia River.
The site reflects a period when trade networks connected Indigenous communities, European merchants, and American settlers across vast distances. Buildings, gardens, and interpretive areas help illustrate how the fort functioned as both an economic hub and a focal point of regional interaction during a time of significant transition in the Pacific Northwest.
Today, the open layout of the fort allows visitors to move through spaces that convey both structure and atmosphere, where broad lawns and wooden palisades create a visual contrast between natural surroundings and the organized geometry of the historic compound. Fort Vancouver provides a perspective on early settlement patterns and the development of the region’s cultural landscape.
