Charleston Naval Base
The Charleston Naval Base was located along the Cooper River in North Charleston, where deep-water access to the Atlantic Ocean supported the development of one of the most significant military installations in the southeastern United States. Established in 1901, the base became an important center for shipbuilding, repair, logistics, and training associated with the United States Navy.
During the twentieth century the installation played a major role in supporting naval operations through both World Wars and the Cold War, eventually becoming one of the largest naval facilities on the East Coast. The shipyard and support facilities contributed significantly to regional economic development while also reflecting broader patterns of military expansion associated with global conflicts. \
The base closed in 1996 following post–Cold War military restructuring, marking the end of nearly a century of naval operations along the Cooper River. oday, the site reflects the continuing historical importance of maritime defense infrastructure within the Charleston region and its role in shaping the economic and cultural landscape of the South Carolina Lowcountry.
