Hearst Castle

Hearst Castle

Hearst Castle is located near San Simeon along California’s Central Coast, where the Santa Lucia Range rises above the Pacific Ocean. The estate occupies elevated terrain overlooking coastal landscapes shaped by tectonic uplift and marine erosion characteristic of the California coastline.

The estate was developed during the early twentieth century by publisher William Randolph Hearst in collaboration with architect Julia Morgan. Known as La Cuesta Encantada, the complex includes numerous buildings, terraces, gardens, and pools incorporating architectural influences from Mediterranean and European traditions.

Hearst Castle illustrates the relationship between landscape, architecture, and private patronage in the development of cultural landmarks along the Pacific coast. The preserved estate reflects early twentieth-century architectural experimentation within California’s coastal environment.
