Manhattan Beach
Manhattan Beach is located along the Pacific Ocean in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County, where sandy shoreline and coastal dunes form part of the Santa Monica Bay coastal plain. The area was historically inhabited by the Tongva people and later became part of Spanish land grants associated with early settlement of Alta California. :
Modern development began in the early twentieth century when rail connections and resort construction transformed the coastal dunes into a seaside community. Incorporated in 1912, Manhattan Beach developed as a residential and recreational destination characterized by its pier, beachfront neighborhoods, and coastal environment.
The coastal landscape illustrates the relationship between shoreline processes, urban development, and recreational culture along the Pacific coast. Today, Manhattan Beach reflects the interaction between natural coastal environments and the growth of metropolitan Los Angeles along the southern California coastline.
