Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park preserves a section of the Shenandoah Valley associated with both agricultural development and the Civil War. The valley’s fertile soils supported plantation agriculture during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, while its north-south orientation made it an important transportation corridor through the Appalachian region. Control of the valley became strategically significant during the Civil War, when military forces sought to secure access to resources and supply routes extending across Virginia.

The Belle Grove plantation illustrates the architectural and agricultural traditions of the late eighteenth century, while the surrounding battlefield landscape preserves the site of the 1864 Battle of Cedar Creek. The engagement formed part of the Shenandoah Valley Campaigns, a series of military operations that reflected the strategic importance of the region’s transportation networks and agricultural production. The preserved landscape demonstrates how civilian environments were transformed by military conflict during the war.
