Golden Gate National Recreation Area – Presidio Unit

The Presidio forms part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area at the entrance to San Francisco Bay, where coastal headlands overlook the Golden Gate strait connecting the Pacific Ocean with inland waterways. The site occupies a strategic geographic position that has influenced military and settlement patterns for centuries.

The Presidio served as a military installation under Spanish, Mexican, and United States administration, reflecting the strategic importance of San Francisco Bay as a protected harbor. Today the site preserves historic buildings, cultural landscapes, and scenic viewpoints overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and Pacific coastline.

The Presidio illustrates the relationship between geography, military history, and conservation within the San Francisco Bay region. The preserved landscape contributes to one of the most visited units of the National Park System.
