Kings Canyon National Park – Grant Grove
Grant Grove is located in the western portion of Kings Canyon National Park in California’s Sierra Nevada, where mixed conifer forests support groves of giant sequoia trees growing at elevations of approximately 6,500 feet. The grove was originally protected in 1890 as General Grant National Park, established to prevent logging of ancient sequoias that had already been heavily harvested throughout the region.
The General Grant Tree, one of the largest trees on Earth by volume, is the focal point of the grove and has been designated the Nation’s Christmas Tree. Trails through the grove illustrate the ecological conditions required for sequoia growth, including periodic fire cycles that maintain forest health and allow seedlings to develop in mineral soil.
Grant Grove reflects the early history of conservation efforts in the United States, representing one of the first landscapes specifically protected to preserve a living organism. The preserved forest demonstrates the long ecological continuity of Sierra Nevada ecosystems.
