Lake Mead National Recreation Area – Hoover Dam
Lake Mead formed following construction of Hoover Dam across the Colorado River in the early twentieth century. The dam created a reservoir that provides water storage and hydroelectric power for communities across the southwestern United States. The project demonstrates how engineering interacts with natural river systems to influence regional development.
The reservoir altered the surrounding desert landscape by introducing a large body of water within an arid environment. Shoreline features reflect changes in water level influenced by precipitation patterns and water demand. The site illustrates how water management influences settlement and infrastructure across the region.
Today, Hoover Dam demonstrates the relationship between engineering and natural resource management. The structure illustrates how river systems influence economic development and population growth across desert environments.
