Mission San Gabriel Arcángel
Mission San Gabriel Arcángel is located in the San Gabriel Valley east of Los Angeles, where fertile plains and river systems supported early Spanish colonial settlement in Alta California. Founded in 1771 as the fourth mission in the California mission chain, the site formed part of a broader network of religious and agricultural communities established by Franciscan missionaries along the Pacific coast.
The mission served as an important center for agricultural production and cultural exchange between Spanish colonists and Indigenous Tongva communities. Over time, the mission developed extensive irrigation systems and farmland that supported regional settlement patterns and contributed to the founding of nearby Los Angeles in 1781.
