Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

Black Canyon of the Gunnison reveals the immense power of river erosion acting on resistant metamorphic rock. The Gunnison River has carved an exceptionally narrow and deep canyon, creating sheer cliffs that descend dramatically toward the river below. The dark appearance of the canyon walls gives the park its distinctive name.

Unlike the layered sandstone landscapes of the Colorado Plateau, the canyon exposes very old crystalline rock, including gneiss and schist. These rock types record geological processes that occurred long before the formation of the modern Rocky Mountains. The canyon’s steep vertical relief creates strong contrasts between light and shadow throughout the day.

📍 Overview

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park protects a deeply incised canyon carved through ancient metamorphic rock by the Gunnison River. The steepness of the canyon walls and narrow river corridor create one of the most dramatic examples of river erosion in North America.
