Torrey Pines
Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is located along the Pacific coast north of San Diego, where coastal cliffs rise above sandy shoreline environments shaped by marine erosion and tectonic uplift. The reserve protects one of the most significant remaining examples of coastal wilderness in southern California, where marine terraces and coastal bluffs illustrate long-term geological processes along the Pacific margin.
The reserve contains habitat for the rare Torrey pine, one of the least common pine species in North America, as well as coastal sage scrub ecosystems adapted to Mediterranean climate conditions characterized by mild winters and dry summers. Migratory birds and marine mammals pass along the coastline, illustrating the ecological importance of coastal environments within the Pacific Flyway.
Torrey Pines demonstrates the relationship between geological processes, coastal climate, and biodiversity along the southern California shoreline. The preserved landscape reflects the ecological diversity of coastal environments within the Pacific region of the United States.
