Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument preserves a vast and geologically diverse landscape shaped by erosion acting upon uplifted sedimentary rock layers of the Colorado Plateau. The monument’s name refers to a sequence of progressively higher cliffs, known as the Grand Staircase, that reveal rock layers spanning hundreds of millions of years. The Escalante River system and surrounding desert terrain illustrate how water and weathering gradually sculpt canyon environments across the region.
Folded rock formations such as the Cockscomb demonstrate the structural influence of tectonic forces that altered the orientation of sedimentary strata.
