Muir Woods National Monument
Muir Woods National Monument protects an old-growth forest of coast redwood trees located in the coastal mountains of Marin County north of San Francisco. The monument preserves a remnant of the extensive redwood forests that once covered large portions of the Pacific coast, where fog-influenced climate conditions support the growth of some of the tallest trees on Earth.
The protected forest is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and reflects early twentieth-century conservation efforts associated with the preservation of unique ecological environments. Established in 1908, the monument was named for naturalist John Muir, whose advocacy contributed to the development of the national park conservation movement.
