Mississippi River Origins

The Mississippi River begins as a small stream flowing from Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota. Glacial activity formed the lake and surrounding landscape, creating a watershed that gradually feeds one of the largest river systems in North America. Over thousands of years, flowing water shaped forests, wetlands, and floodplains along the river’s course.

Although the Mississippi becomes a major commercial waterway further south, its origins are modest, beginning as a narrow channel that visitors can walk across. The river flows north briefly before turning south and eventually traveling more than 2,300 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. The headwaters region illustrates how small hydrological systems can develop into major continental waterways.
